Applications of iGC-SEA and Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) Techniques on Catalysis and Carbon-based Materials

The free half-day workshop covers in-depth Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) and Inverse Gas Chromatography – Surface Energy Analyzer (iGC-SEA) for carbon and catalysis applications.

Guest speakers from industry and academia will discuss DVS and iGC-SEA, from theory to common applications and present real case studies. In addition, an instrument demonstration will follow after the presentations.

Date: 29 September, 2016

Time: 1000 – 1430 (BST)

Venue: Room C202, 3rd Floor Merz Court, School of Chemical Engineering & Advanced Materials, Newcastle University, UK

Programme:

Morning session

1000 – 1015: Welcome / Registration

1015 – 1045: Introduction

1045 – 1130: DVS Vacuum studies of Carbon materials and other Catalysts (Damiano Cattaneo, Surface Measurement Systems)

The adsorption of vapours on porous materials is important and vital within numerous industries. The DVS Vacuum system allows for real-time monitoring and controlling of vapour and gas concentration for sorption measurements in solid state materials. This presentation will specifically be focused on the studies of sorption mechanism occurring on the surface of carbon and zeolites from the analysis of sorption / desorption isotherms and hysteresis effects.

1130 – 1215: The Assessment of the Surface Chemistry and Vapour Sorption Properties of Aluminosilicates and Carbon Based Materials by iGC-SEA (Dr Majid Naderi, Surface Measurement Systems)

Thermodynamic parameters of materials are highly relevant for practical applications. In particular, surface energies of catalysts and carbon nanotubes are of high interest. The surface energy and acid-base properties of the catalysts would determine the properties of the active sites involved in the catalytic process and nanofiller-matrix interactions may be calculated by means of the thermodynamic work of adhesion from the surface energy values. Dynamic vapour phase techniques are particularly useful in the determination of these properties as they can easily and reproducibly be applied to powders and fibres using a wide variety of probe molecules.

1215 – 1300: Lunch

Afternoon session

1300 – 1345: New product: DVS Adventure – Water Vapor Sorption Analyzer
